I am a young professional, who after graduating the University of New Haven decided to stick around. I've been a West Haven resident for 8 years now. On March 14 2017, New Haven county issued a parking ban, including West Haven. I understand that parking bans are necessary to salt and plow commercial & residential areas. I truly do understand. Often times, where there is a significant of amount of snowfall police would come knocking on doors to let people know their cars would have to be moved in order for the plow trucks to do their job. For some reason that didn't happen today. On this fine Tuesday, March 14th 2017. I woke up to find that my car had been towed in addition to about 20 other people who lived on our street. After calling local tow companies, two companies told me they both had my car. After walking to one of the tow companies in the wintry mix of freezing snow just learn they made a mistake and actually didn't have my car. In all fairness, it was well worth it because they told me the city of West Haven position behind the parking ban. Which I was a little bit skeptical at first but when I went to the second tow truck company they confirmed it. Apparently, all the tow/garages in West Haven were all called down to City Hall for a meeting where It was discussed that the next time there is a snowstorm. The city was going to not only ticket your vehicle, they were going to also tow your vehicle at a ridiculously high price (it cost me $260 for both). Also when I went to pick up my car they told me that I would have to pay for my ticket at the tow place. Which I found rather unusual. I ask the worker why are we paying our ticket it here? His response was " the city knows people will never pay for their ticket unless we withhold their car's from them". I had heard the rumors about the city of West Haven having huge money problems. I dismissed it as gossip at first but now I can see how true it is. To do something like this to the people of West Haven is outrageous. West Haven isn't a town like Woodbridge, North Haven, East Haven, or Branford. There are a lot of hard working blue collared people here trying their best to make ends meet and for the city to do something like this is sheisty. I am so happy I rent. I will be leaving West Haven as soon as my lease is up. Never to return. I advise all of you to do the same.
